Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez
In Yours Truly, Dr. Briana Ortiz is going through a rough patch – a divorce, a brother in need of a kidney donor, and a new man-doctor taking the promotion she wants. But when Dr. Jacob Maddox sends her a heartfelt letter, their relationship takes a surprising turn as they exchange letters, share lunch dates, and talk about everything from horses to kidney donations. As their connection deepens, Jacob offers Briana the ultimate gift – a kidney for her brother. But can Briana resist his charm when he calls in a favor she can’t refuse?
Book review of Abby Jimenez
Yours Truly by Sarah Hogle is a captivating love story that will make you laugh, cry, and fall in love with the characters. The book revolves around the lives of Brianna and Jacob, two characters who are dealing with their own emotional struggles. Brianna is trying to pick up the pieces of her life after a divorce, while Jacob is coping with a breakup and a lifelong battle with crippling anxiety. The dual POV made this book incredibly relatable and romantic, and I found myself rooting for these characters from the very beginning.
The way Brianna and Jacob thawed slowly and methodically was so beautiful, and the way they fell in love moment by moment was a joy to read. However, I can see where some people might not love this book, as the entire plot is based on a miscommunication trope. At times, Brianna’s misunderstandings of Jacob were frustrating, and I found myself wanting to yell at her.
But the last 20 percent of the book completely did me in. The third-act breakup tore me apart, and the way Jacob showed up for Brianna put me back together. I even dog-eared the chapter so I can read it when I need an emotional release. It might be one of my favorite endings I’ve read.
One of the things I loved most about this book was the character development. Both Brianna and Jacob are dealing with real-life issues and are struggling to figure out how to move forward. They both think the other is not interested in that way, and they try to step around it. The way they initially and continue to connect via handwritten letters and notes is adorable and swoon-worthy, and it makes so much sense for someone who struggles with anxiety.
The deep look into the day-to-day decision-making, thinking, and reprocessing of someone with social anxiety was so well portrayed in the book and made the character so relatable. As someone who personally deals with this, I appreciated how accurately it was depicted.
The humor in the book was also a highlight for me. Abby has a sense of humor that shines through in her books, and the quips, banter, and silliness of things made me laugh out loud over and over.
Final verdict
Overall, Yours Truly is not my favorite from Abby Jimenez, but it is a book I enjoyed, would recommend, and would read again. The miscommunication part could have been expanded further, and the last 20% of the book was a bit tougher to get through. But the character development, the adorable romance, and the humor make this book a can’t miss. I’ll be yelling about it to anyone who will listen..
